Flashmob: 5th April 2007 @ Victoria, London

On Thursday, the 5th of April, a 4000 person strong flashmob occurred at Victoria train station in London. Sounds like great fun!

It's just like a real club when everyone cheers together! Or pehaps it's rather a simulacrum of a club. Or is it just playing at being a simulacrum of a club...?

I love the guy with the glowsticks!

The Guardian have an article about a recent Ministry of Defence "future strategic context" report which mentions a dystopian vision of flashmobbing,

"By 2035, an implantable "information chip" could be wired directly to the brain. A growing pervasiveness of information communications technology will enable states, terrorists or criminals, to mobilise "flashmobs", challenging security forces to match this potential agility coupled with an ability to concentrate forces quickly in a small area."

It's also interesting for it's views on Marxism, which while not directly related to this blog might be of interest to some,

"The middle classes could become a revolutionary class, taking the role envisaged for the proletariat by Marx"

Jane McGonigal's talks and writings about her own experience as a flashmob organiser would be interesting to anyone thinking about this 'play/performance' phenomenon.
She has a link to her visuals/talks and papers on her website.
